Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her life, but was able to spend summers with her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member on the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was given she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
